There are places India sends everyone, and then there is Visakhapatnam: Vizag, to the people who know it. A port city on the eastern seaboard that somehow stayed off the well-trodden circuit, and that is precisely its appeal. Incredible India promises "the vibrant culture and scenic beauty of India," and by the account we found, Vizag delivers it without the elbows-out crush.

The geography does the heavy lifting. The celebrated beach road runs with the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Eastern Ghats rising on the other, said to carry the sea gale on your cheek the whole way out to Rushikonda. Rushikonda is the one that earned its fame. The move for seclusion is to keep going: past it lies Bheemili, set where the Gosthani river meets the ocean, the kind of quiet corner a certain traveler drives an extra half hour to reach.

Beaches for the days you want company, beaches for the days you don't, hill drives when you'd rather trade the shore for the ridgeline. It does not market itself hard, which is why the in-the-know set has started to circle it.
