Angkor
Siem Reap Province, Cambodia
Angkor is the capital ground of the Khmer Empire — hundreds of temples spread through forest and rice field north of Siem Reap, with Angkor Wat at the centre of them. Every one of those temples sits inside a paid archaeological park, so these challenges stand on the ground the pass does not own: the town's pagodas and markets, one Angkorian temple that survives inside a living wat, the reservoir the Khmer dug a thousand years ago, and the twelfth-century bridge still carrying a road sixty kilometres east.
