City · #57 of the Top 500

Las Vegas

Nevada

Las Vegas grew from a desert spring and a 1905 railroad stop into the town of the Strip, a four-mile run of themed resorts and fountains south of the old downtown on Fremont Street. Within an hour's drive the city gives way to the red sandstone of Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire, the pines of Mount Charleston, and Hoover Dam holding back Lake Mead on the Colorado River.

About two and a half hours, free throughout. County law makes it a misdemeanor to stop on the Strip's pedestrian bridges, so take every photo from the sidewalks.
