Monterey
California
Monterey was the capital of Spanish and Mexican California and then a sardine town, and its adobes, wharf and canneries still stand within a walk of each other. From there the peninsula runs west along Pacific Grove's shore, behind the toll gates of 17-Mile Drive and down through Carmel and Point Lobos, and Highway 1 carries on south into the Big Sur coast.
