Venice

Veneto, Italy

Venice is a city built on pilings across a lagoon with no cars in it, so you move on foot over its bridges or on a public vaporetto, and the ground between the buildings — the campi, the fondamente, the bridge crowns and the quays — is where most of the city actually happens. On roughly sixty peak days between April and July the city charges day visitors a five to ten euro access contribution to enter the historic centre between 08:30 and 16:00; that is a charge for crossing into the city, not a ticket for any place in these challenges, and it does not apply to Murano, Burano or Torcello.

Three stops on the water side of San Marco, about two hours on foot. Go early, before the day boats land, when the stone is still wet from the tide and you can hear your own steps in the arcades.

Half a day along the south edge of Dorsoduro with one public boat hop over to the Giudecca: a neighbourhood campo, a working gondola yard seen from the far bank, a kilometre of open promenade, the point where two canals meet, and Palladio's steps.
