I have learned to distrust silhouettes. A shape this famous usually asks you to forgive the rooms behind it. This one does not. The Burj Al Arab Jumeirah sits on its own island off Umm Suqeim, reached by causeway and, if you allow it, by chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce, and the whole place is engineered around one uncompromising idea of how a guest should arrive. What surprised me was how quietly the fundamentals verify behind the legend. Two hundred and two duplex suites, each recognized by Forbes Travel Guide. Eight signature restaurants that do not lean on the address. A rooftop infinity-pool terrace held out over the gulf, where the water in front of you and the water beneath you stop being two different things. Rare is not the same as loud, and this is the rare kind that keeps its promises after the photograph. Standing on the causeway with the tower behind me, I found nothing to argue with. Travel like a Bause.
